Bangkok to Pattaya is a straightforward 150 km overland trip. For most travellers, a direct air-conditioned coach is the best overall choice: it is inexpensive, frequent and avoids negotiating a fare. A private taxi is fastest door to door, while the train is the cheapest on some departures but has a much less flexible timetable.
| Option | Typical time | Typical price | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coach | 2–3 hours | THB 140–220 |
Typical price from
฿160–฿2,200
| Best value overall |
| Van | 2.5–3.5 hours | THB 160–300 | Smaller pickup points |
| Train | 2.5–4 hours | THB 30–170 | Lowest fare, limited schedule |
| Taxi/private car | 2–3 hours | THB 1,400–2,500 per vehicle | Door-to-door convenience |
Times and fares are planning ranges, not live quotes. Bangkok traffic can add substantial time, especially on Friday afternoons and holiday weekends.
The coach is best for most people. Roong Reuang Coach operates Bangkok–Pattaya services and also a dedicated Suvarnabhumi Airport connection. If you are already beside the BTS Sukhumvit Line, Ekkamai is usually the simplest city departure; after an international flight, the airport coach avoids backtracking into Bangkok. The operator and Airports of Thailand confirm the airport service.
The train can be cheapest, but it is not a turn-up-and-go substitute for the bus. State Railway of Thailand publishes direct Eastern Line services, including a Bangkok departure reaching Pattaya in the morning, but service patterns vary by day and train. Check the current SRT timetable before building your day around it.
A taxi is fastest door to door when roads are clear. It becomes more reasonable for three or four people sharing the vehicle, or when carrying bulky luggage, but agree on the total price, tolls and exact Pattaya hotel before departure.
City coaches commonly leave Ekkamai Bus Terminal, beside Ekkamai BTS, and arrive at the North Pattaya Bus Terminal on North Pattaya Road. This is not the beachfront: use a songthaew or local taxi for the final leg. Some airport services use a Pattaya/Jomtien stop instead, so never assume every ticket has the same arrival point.
At Suvarnabhumi, the official coach counter is on Level 1 in the public arrivals area. Airports of Thailand lists one checked bag up to 20 kg plus one personal bag as the standard free allowance for this service; oversize or overweight items can cost extra. Travellers with surfboards, bicycles or several large cases should contact the operator or choose a private vehicle.
Vans can leave from several Bangkok meeting points and may offer a useful hotel-area drop in Pattaya, but they have less luggage space and are less comfortable than a full-size coach. Read the ticket literally: “Pattaya” may mean a roadside office rather than your accommodation. Buy an extra seat or choose a coach if your suitcase cannot safely fit in the luggage area.
The train is the scenic budget option. Services leave Bangkok (Hua Lamphong) and stop at Pattaya railway station, east of central Pattaya. The SRT’s own Pattaya travel information confirms direct service. Allow time and money for transport from the station to the beach, Walking Street, Jomtien or your hotel.
Book airport coaches and Friday/holiday departures ahead when your timing matters. For an ordinary weekday city coach, booking one or two days ahead is normally enough; always check current schedules because services can change. At the airport, leave a buffer for immigration and baggage collection rather than buying a departure you may miss.
The road is mostly motorway, but delays remain possible. Do not schedule an unprotected international flight immediately after the return journey. Pattaya’s wet season does not normally stop road services, although heavy rain can slow the final approach.
Yes. Roong Reuang Coach runs a direct Suvarnabhumi–Pattaya service from the airport’s Level 1 public area. Confirm the current Pattaya drop-off when booking.
Ekkamai is convenient from central Sukhumvit because it sits beside the BTS. Suvarnabhumi is better if you are arriving by air and do not need to enter Bangkok first.
Do not assume the same timetable every day. SRT publishes several service types and some operate only on particular days, so check the official timetable for your date.
North Pattaya Bus Terminal and Pattaya railway station are inland. Budget for a songthaew or taxi to your hotel; the time depends on the neighbourhood and traffic.
Confirm the exact terminal and check-in time shown on your ticket.
