For most travellers, a shared van is the best balance of price and convenience. It normally takes about 3–4 hours and may collect from Phuket Town, the airport or major beach areas before dropping in Krabi Town or Ao Nang. The cheapest clearly defined option is usually a bus or minibus from Phuket Bus Terminal 2 to Krabi Bus Terminal, while a private car is fastest at roughly 2.5–3 hours door to door. Sea services exist, but routing and operating periods vary; do not build a low-season itinerary around a boat without reconfirming it.

These are planning ranges, not live quotes. Current listings show a roughly three-hour terminal-to-terminal bus journey, but hotel pickups, traffic over the Sarasin Bridge and local drop-off rounds can add time. Check the current Phuket Bus Terminal 2 listings before choosing a same-day connection.
Best overall: shared van. It removes at least one local transfer and is especially useful if your real destination is Ao Nang rather than Krabi Town. Read the ticket carefully: “Krabi” can mean the bus terminal, a town office, Krabi Airport or a hotel zone.
Cheapest: public bus or scheduled minibus. Departures commonly use Phuket Bus Terminal 2, north of Phuket Old Town, and arrive at Krabi Bus Terminal near Talat Kao. Budget separately for transport from Patong, Kata or Karon to the Phuket terminal and from Krabi’s terminal to your hotel.
Fastest: private transfer. A direct car avoids collection rounds and terminal waiting. The quoted amount is usually for the vehicle, so it becomes more competitive for three or four passengers. Confirm whether airport parking, child seats and late pickups are included.
Scheduled buses and minibuses use the year-round road route through Phang Nga. Current booking results identify Phuket Bus Terminal 2 as a principal departure point and show multiple daytime services taking around three hours to Krabi. Shared tourist vans may instead leave from Phuket Bus Terminal 1, an operator office, Phuket Airport or your hotel.
At the other end, Krabi Bus Terminal is practical for Krabi Town but not on Ao Nang beach. A local songthaew, taxi or included van transfer is still needed. If your ticket promises an Ao Nang hotel drop, expect the total journey to be longer while the driver serves several properties.
A sea connection can link Phuket’s Rassada Pier with Krabi-area piers, sometimes directly and sometimes through Phi Phi. This is not automatically the quickest door-to-door choice: both piers require road transfers, check-in is earlier than departure, and some itineraries involve a boat change at Tonsai Pier.
One established operator publishes Phuket–Krabi connections via Phi Phi and warns that schedules or operating periods may change without notice. Its timetable identifies Rassada Pier in Phuket and Klong Jilad Pier in Krabi. Review the operator’s current ferry timetable, then verify that the service operates on your exact date.
Sea conditions matter. The Thai Meteorological Department issues Andaman wind-wave warnings during stronger southwest-monsoon spells and may advise small boats to remain ashore. Check current TMD warnings before departure, especially from May to October.
Book ahead for weekends, Thai public holidays and the December–March high season. With a flexible weekday road journey, reserving a few days before travel is normally sufficient; private cars and hotel-pickup vans deserve earlier booking if you have a flight or fixed boat connection.
Avoid a tight onward flight from Krabi Airport. Shared vans can run late because of collection rounds, traffic and unscheduled passenger stops. For a boat, build in even more margin because weather disruptions may move or cancel departures. Keep valuables and medication in a small bag you retain, and label checked luggage before pier handling.
Yes. Scheduled buses or minibuses operate between Phuket Bus Terminal 2 and Krabi. Some shared vans also run direct in the sense that passengers stay with one booked operator, although they may stop for pickups or transfers.
Only if you value the sea journey and a suitable sailing operates. Once pier transfers and check-in are included, the ferry is often slower and less reliable than the road route.
Choose a ticket that explicitly includes Ao Nang hotel drop-off or Nopparat Thara/Ao Nang arrival. Krabi Bus Terminal and Klong Jilad Pier both require onward transport.
Yes, shared and private airport transfers are sold. Compare the actual airport pickup with a cheaper journey that first requires travelling into Phuket Town; the direct option may save several hours overall.
Confirm the exact terminal and check-in time shown on your ticket.
