Bangkok is reached by two airports, several railway corridors and multiple bus terminals, so the best arrival is the one that fits your final district—not simply the cheapest ticket. From Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK), the Airport Rail Link is usually the most predictable route toward central Bangkok. Don Mueang Airport (DMK) connects to the SRT Red Line and airport buses. Most major intercity trains now use Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal, while long-distance buses may finish at Mo Chit 2, Ekkamai or Sai Tai Mai. Check the exact terminal on your ticket, then plan the last urban transfer separately.
Getting to Bangkok
Flights provide the widest national and international access. BKK is east of the centre and works well with the Airport Rail Link; DMK is north of the city and is especially common for domestic and regional low-cost flights. They are separate airports, and crossing Bangkok between them can consume several hours in traffic. The free inter-airport shuttle published by Airports of Thailand is for connecting passengers with identification and proof of onward travel, not a general city bus.
Rail is practical from northern, northeastern and southern Thailand. State Railway of Thailand services mainly arrive at Krung Thep Aphiwat, Bangkok's large long-distance terminal north of the centre. Some local and eastern services use other stations, including Hua Lamphong, so never navigate from the words “Bangkok station” alone. Read the station name printed on the ticket.
Intercity buses reach different terminals according to direction and operator. Mo Chit 2 serves many northern and northeastern routes, Ekkamai is useful for some eastern services, and Sai Tai Mai handles many southern and western departures. A private coach may use its own office or roadside pickup point instead.
Main arrival points in Bangkok
Suvarnabhumi Airport: the Airport Rail Link station is on Level B1. The airport currently lists rail service from 05:30 to midnight, but this is a dynamic timetable. Metered taxis use a queue-ticket system on Level 1; tolls and the airport surcharge are additional to the meter.
Don Mueang Airport: use the connected SRT Red Line for a rail transfer toward Krung Thep Aphiwat, or an airport bus if its route is closer to your hotel. Late arrivals may require a taxi.
Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal: this is the key arrival for major long-distance trains on the northern, northeastern and southern corridors. The MRT Blue Line at Bang Sue and the SRT Red Line provide onward rail connections; allow walking and orientation time inside the large complex.
