The easiest way to reach Phuket from far away is usually a flight into Phuket International Airport. From Bangkok or another mainland city, an interprovincial bus can be more economical; from Krabi, Koh Phi Phi or Koh Lanta, a minivan or ferry may create the more direct journey. The important detail is that “Phuket” is not one arrival point. Your ticket may end at the airport, Bus Terminal 1, Bus Terminal 2, a named pier or your hotel. Check that endpoint first, then plan the transfer to Patong, Phuket Town, Kata, Karon, Rawai or another district. Island road journeys can be substantial even when both places are labelled Phuket.
Getting to Phuket
Flying removes the long mainland road leg and is the clearest option for most international arrivals or short trips from Bangkok. Compare the complete Bangkok to Phuket journey, including baggage, airport check-in and the transfer at both ends, rather than comparing flight time with an overnight bus in isolation.
Road travel works well from nearby southern provinces. A bus or shared minivan crosses onto Phuket by bridge, so there is no passenger-ferry transfer simply to enter the island. From Krabi, compare the Krabi to Phuket route by final drop-off: a hotel transfer may justify a higher fare if it avoids another taxi from a bus terminal. Travellers coming from Koh Lanta can review the full Koh Lanta to Phuket connection, because the itinerary may combine island road transport, a vehicle crossing and a longer mainland drive.
Sea arrivals are useful from Andaman islands and selected coastal piers. They should be booked by the exact departure and arrival pier, not by city name alone. A ferry can feel direct on the map while still leaving a long road transfer across Phuket.
Main arrival points in Phuket
Phuket International Airport is in the north of the island. Domestic and international passengers use different arrival processes, so tell a pickup driver which terminal or flight you are using. Airports of Thailand lists airport buses, public vans, taxis, limousine services and car rental among the onward options. The airport-to-town bus serves Phuket Town, while Phuket Smart Bus is designed for major west-coast beach areas and Rawai. Recheck its stop and timetable for your travel date.
Bus Terminal 1 is the older terminal in Phuket Town and is useful for regional and local connections. Bus Terminal 2 is the principal long-distance terminal, including Bangkok-linked services. They are not interchangeable: confirm the terminal printed on the booking before arranging a pickup.
