Koh Samui can be reached by direct flight or a coordinated mainland road-and-ferry journey. Flying into Samui Airport is the simplest long-distance arrival and avoids the sea connection. Bus- and train-based itineraries usually continue through Surat Thani or Chumphon to a named ferry. The island is large and has several gateways: Samui Airport, Nathon, Lipa Noi, Pralarn/Maenam and Bangrak serve different parts of the coast. Before comparing fares, identify the arrival point and add the road transfer to Chaweng, Bophut, Lamai or the booked hotel.
Getting to Koh Samui
The Bangkok to Koh Samui guide compares a direct flight with bus-and-ferry and train-and-ferry journeys. Choose a flight for a short stay or simple connection, but include baggage and transfers. An overland combination can cost less and suit slow travel, though it involves several handovers.
From the mainland, Surat Thani to Koh Samui is the principal gateway route. Match the ticket to Surat Thani Airport, Phun Phin railway station or a city pickup. Other services travel through Chumphon. A through ticket is normally easier because the operator plans the road vehicle and sailing together.
Main arrival points on Koh Samui
Samui Airport is in Bo Phut in the northeast and is convenient for Chaweng, Bangrak, Choeng Mon and Bophut. Confirm the pickup meeting point and flight number.
Nathon and Lipa Noi are west-coast vehicle-ferry arrivals. They can suit western accommodation but require a substantial island transfer to Chaweng or the airport side. Pralarn/Maenam serves the north coast, while Bangrak is useful for the northeast and selected inter-island services. Follow the pier on the ticket; “Koh Samui ferry terminal” is not one place.
Arriving from another Gulf island
The Koh Phangan to Koh Samui guide and Koh Tao to Koh Samui guide compare direct passenger services. Their Samui arrival pier depends on operator and timetable. A faster crossing can create a longer road transfer if it lands across the island from the hotel.
For onward travel, use Koh Samui to Koh Phangan or Koh Samui to Koh Tao. Select the departure pier before arranging a taxi. Nathon, Pralarn and Bangrak are not interchangeable check-in locations.
Local transfer after arrival
Samui's accommodation is spread around a long ring road. A taxi, shared van or pre-arranged hotel transfer is normally required after the airport or pier. Send the accommodation pin and ask whether the fare is per passenger or vehicle. A ticket with “hotel transfer” should name its coverage zone.
