For most travellers, a direct flight is fastest, while an overnight sleeper train is the most memorable and comfortable overland choice. Buses are often the cheapest practical overnight option. The route is roughly 690 km by rail, so compare the entire trip: airports add check-in and transfers; night trains and buses save a hotel night.

Fly when time is scarce. Flights use Suvarnabhumi (BKK) or Don Mueang (DMK) and arrive at Chiang Mai International Airport (CNX), close to the old city. The official airport page gives the airport’s address on Mahidol Road and operating hours; still allow time for traffic and check-in.
Choose the sleeper train when the journey is part of the trip. It leaves Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal and arrives at Chiang Mai railway station, east of the Ping River. SRT’s current timetable lists several Chiang Mai services, including overnight special express and rapid trains.
The bus is normally the lowest-cost easy booking. Most long-distance services leave Mo Chit 2 / Bangkok Bus Terminal (Chatuchak) and arrive at Chiang Mai Arcade Bus Terminal, where local songthaews and taxis continue into town.
Second-class air-conditioned sleepers are the usual balance of price and comfort. Staff convert seats into bunks; lower berths are wider and often sell first. First class offers a private compartment on selected trains. Day trains cost less but use a full sightseeing day.
Bring a layer for strong air-conditioning and keep valuables in your berth. Large bags stay near the berth or in designated areas, not in an airline-style checked system. Food availability varies, so carry water and a simple breakfast.
Overnight coaches range from standard air-conditioned buses to wider-seat VIP classes. The label does not guarantee the same layout across operators: compare seat configuration, toilet, pickup terminal and arrival terminal. Large bags usually go underneath; keep medication, passport and electronics with you.
Road time can stretch during holiday traffic. The bus often reaches Chiang Mai early in the morning, so confirm whether your accommodation accepts luggage before check-in.
Bangkok–Chiang Mai is a high-frequency domestic market. Compare the final cost after checked baggage and airport travel. A fare from DMK may be poor value if you are staying beside Suvarnabhumi, and vice versa. CNX is near the city, but morning and evening roads can be busy.
Train tickets should be booked through SRT’s official channels or a reputable seller with the train number and class clearly shown. For separate flight connections, leave a conservative buffer because missed connections on separate tickets are normally your responsibility.
Northern cool season, roughly November to February, brings heavy demand. Smoke and haze can affect Chiang Mai in the late dry season; transport usually continues, but flight visibility or air quality may influence plans. Summer rain can slow the road without normally cancelling the route.
If you arrive before hotel check-in, ask the property to store luggage. The railway and Arcade terminals are outside the old city walls, while the airport is southwest of the centre; none should be treated as the same arrival point.
Yes if you value a flat berth and experience over speed. It saves a hotel night, but a flight is much faster.
Most long-distance northern trains use Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal. Verify the station printed on the ticket.
Most Bangkok coaches use the Chiang Mai Arcade terminal complex, east of the old city. Check the terminal number and onward taxi plan.
Book sleeper berths weeks ahead for peak dates. Flights also rise in price near holidays; ordinary buses usually need less notice.
Confirm the exact terminal and check-in time shown on your ticket.
