A direct flight to Koh Samui is the best and fastest choice: about 1 hour 30 minutes in the air and no mainland ferry. Bus-and-ferry is usually cheapest. Train-and-ferry costs more but offers a sleeper berth. For overland tickets, the destination may be Nathon, Pralarn or another Samui pier, not your hotel.

Combined tickets link an overnight coach from Bangkok with a Gulf ferry. Lomprayah’s 2026 timetable lists Bangkok departures to Pralarn Pier on Samui via Chumphon. Other combinations travel to Donsak and use vehicle ferries to Nathon or Lipa Noi. The route and arrival pier matter more than the generic “Koh Samui” label.
Train and ferry
Take the Southern Line from Krung Thep Aphiwat to Surat Thani railway station at Phun Phin, then a bus to Donsak and a ferry. Seatran and Raja vehicle ferries take about 90 minutes between Donsak and Samui; Raja publishes an official sailing schedule. Through tickets reduce connection risk. With separate tickets, leave several hours.
Luggage, booking and weather
Air fares may include different checked allowances. On combined land-and-sea services, bags are handled several times; label them and keep valuables with you. Lomprayah’s terms commonly include 20 kg before excess charges, but confirm the current ticket conditions.
Book direct flights early for Christmas–New Year and Thai holidays. Gulf weather is often roughest around October–December; ferries may be delayed or cancelled for safety. Avoid an unprotected onward flight immediately after a ferry.

Train passengers arrive at Surat Thani station in Phun Phin, not at Donsak. The bus leg to the ferry can take around 90 minutes or more. Air passengers using Surat Thani Airport also need a road transfer. A through ticket is valuable because the supplier assigns a feasible ferry; with separate tickets, allow enough time to collect baggage and reach the correct operator’s pier.
At Donsak, Seatran and Raja use different facilities. Do not ask a driver simply for “the Samui ferry”: show the operator and pier on the ticket. On Samui, Nathon is convenient for the west and northwest, Lipa Noi for the west, while Pralarn is on the north coast. Chaweng or Lamai requires another road leg from all of them.
Travellers prone to seasickness should carry their usual medication and choose a larger vehicle ferry when schedule permits. Keep electronics protected from spray during smaller high-speed connections.

A direct Samui flight can look expensive but includes arrival on the island. A cheaper flight to Surat Thani still needs airport-to-pier transport, ferry fare and a Samui transfer. Price all four pieces before deciding. Conversely, an overnight bus or sleeper may save accommodation, though a poor night’s sleep can reduce the first day.
For families, confirm whether child fares include a seat on each leg. Private transfers should state ferry inclusion and whether the vehicle travels aboard or passengers change at the pier. Travellers renting a car should compare island rental with taking a vehicle ferry; one-way mainland rentals rarely permit island drop-off.
