The easiest way from Surat Thani to Koh Samui is a combined bus or van and ferry ticket. Choose the product that starts at your actual location—Surat Thani Town, Surat Thani Airport or Surat Thani Train Station—and ends at a named Samui pier. Typical combined journeys take around 2–5 hours and cost roughly THB 300–800, depending on origin, ferry and transfer inclusion.
| Option | Typical total time | Typical price | Best for | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Van/bus + high-speed ferry | 2–3.5 hr | THB 350–800 | Fastest coordinated trip |
Typical price from
฿350–฿850
| Less schedule choice |
| Bus + Seatran/Raja vehicle ferry | 3–5 hr | THB 300–600 | Best overall and regular service | Slower sea crossing |
| Separate transfer to Donsak + ferry | 3–5 hr | THB 300–900 | Flexible travellers | You manage connection risk |
| Private car + ferry | 2.5–4 hr | THB 2,000+ per vehicle | Groups or late connections | Much higher cost |
The Tourism Authority of Thailand guide identifies Raja and Seatran services from Donsak and their Samui landing points. Lomprayah publishes an official 2026 timetable. Use current booking results only to compare date-specific prices and products.
Best overall: a single ticket covering the road transfer and ferry. It gives the operator responsibility for the planned connection and avoids negotiating transport at Donsak.
Cheapest: scheduled bus plus vehicle ferry products often offer the lowest through fare. Confirm that the ticket begins at your actual Surat Thani point.
Fastest: high-speed ferry combinations can complete the route in about two to three hours from town under favourable conditions. Airport and train-station starts take longer because they are farther from the pier transfer.
“Surat Thani” is not one terminal. Surat Thani Town is the city centre. Surat Thani Airport (URT) lies west of the city. Surat Thani Train Station is in Phun Phin, not downtown. A ticket from the wrong point can create an expensive taxi ride or missed departure.
If arriving by flight or overnight train, use a through-ticket explicitly naming the airport or station. Leave margin for baggage collection or train delay. When separate tickets are unavoidable, choose a later ferry connection rather than the minimum theoretical transfer.
The main vehicle ferries leave from Donsak, on the coast east of Surat Thani city. The road leg is therefore essential; Surat Thani itself is not on Koh Samui’s ferry shoreline. On a combined ticket, staff direct passengers from bus or van to the correct vessel.
Seatran and Raja operate from separate facilities in the Donsak area. Do not ask a taxi simply for “the ferry pier.” Use the operator and terminal printed on the voucher. High-speed services can use operator-specific arrangements, so follow the current ticket rather than an old map pin.
Vehicle ferries commonly arrive at Nathon or Lipa Noi on Samui’s west coast. Some fast passenger products can arrive at Pralarn/Maenam or Bangrak. These piers are spread across a large island.
Nathon and Lipa Noi suit western Samui but require a longer road transfer to Chaweng, Bophut or the airport. Bangrak is closest to the airport side; Pralarn/Maenam serves the north. Check whether the ticket ends at the pier or includes a hotel drop-off.
Standard luggage is usually accepted on combined services, but it may be handled separately between van, bus and ferry. Label every large bag and keep documents and valuables with you. Confirm bulky sports equipment, prams or multiple suitcases before booking.
Vehicle ferries can carry cars and motorbikes, but passenger transfer tickets do not include vehicle carriage. Drivers need the correct vehicle category, registration details and an arrival buffer; queues can be longer around holidays.
Vehicle ferries are generally less sensitive than small speedboats, but strong wind can still delay service. Do not plan a tight hotel check-in, airport pickup or tour immediately after the scheduled arrival.
Book ahead during Thai holidays and peak island periods. Later mainland arrivals can miss the last practical same-day connection, so staying in Surat Thani or Donsak may be safer than relying on an unverified late boat.

Most combined services take about 2–5 hours. The exact time depends on whether you start in town, at the airport or at the train station.
It is included only in a combined ticket. A ferry-only ticket may assume you are already at the correct Donsak terminal.
Common arrivals include Nathon, Lipa Noi, Pralarn/Maenam and Bangrak. Confirm the pier because onward taxi time differs greatly.
Yes on vehicle ferries, with a separate vehicle booking. Ordinary passenger combo tickets do not cover a car or motorbike.
Possibly, but last useful connections vary. Check the actual date and leave enough time for baggage and the road transfer; an overnight stay may be safer.
Confirm the exact terminal and check-in time shown on your ticket.
Arrive in Koh Samui; the exact stop or pier depends on your ticket.
