Koh Samet has no airport or bridge. The standard journey is a bus, van or private road transfer to Ban Phe in Rayong province, followed by a passenger boat to the island. Nadan Pier is the principal public arrival point, but speedboats may use a named beach instead. Ban Phe has several piers and ticket counters, so the words “ferry to Koh Samet” are not enough to navigate the transfer. Before leaving Bangkok or Rayong, confirm the mainland pier, boat operator, island endpoint and whether any final resort transfer is included.
Getting to Koh Samet
The Bangkok to Koh Samet guide compares through road-and-boat products with independent travel to Ban Phe. A combined bus or van and ferry ticket is normally easiest because the road carrier delivers passengers into a planned boat connection. Read the inclusions: some products finish at Ban Phe, some include the ordinary ferry to Nadan, and others advertise a speedboat or hotel zone.
Independent road travel offers flexibility when staying in Rayong or choosing a boat at the pier. It also creates connection risk. Bangkok traffic can delay the van beyond the practical regular-boat window. Travel early, keep the written pier name available and avoid assuming that every Ban Phe counter serves the same arrival point on the island.
Ban Phe piers and boat choices
Ban Phe is a mainland port area rather than one universal terminal. The ticket should identify the correct pier or counter. Show that information to a driver instead of asking for “the Koh Samet ferry.” If buying locally, confirm the departure facility, island landing, return conditions and total fare before paying.
The ordinary passenger ferry is usually the most practical choice with rolling luggage because it arrives at a working pier. Speedboats are faster on the water and may land nearer a resort, but the boarding can be less comfortable and a beach landing can require stepping through shallow water. Travellers with reduced mobility, young children or fragile bags should confirm accessibility rather than choosing only by crossing time.
Arrival at Nadan Pier
Nadan Pier is on the northeast of Koh Samet and provides the clearest common arrival. It is convenient for the settlement and Sai Kaew area, but southern beaches still need a road transfer. Shared songthaews and resort pickups handle this final leg. Ask for the fare and beach before boarding, and keep cash for local transport.
Some speedboat tickets name a beach rather than Nadan. Verify whether the boat can safely handle your luggage and whether the property expects passengers at that landing. A resort name on the booking does not necessarily mean staff will meet every boat without advance notice.
