Ferry routes to Thailand’s islands
Understand common island links, mainland piers and combined transfers before checking weather-sensitive current schedules.

Times, prices and availability are estimates unless explicitly identified as current provider data.

Best for
When Ferry makes sense
- Island-to-island journeys
- Mainland connections to the Gulf and Andaman islands
- Combined bus-and-ferry travel
Confirm the pier
An island or town can be served by several piers. Check both departure and arrival pier names.
Leave a connection buffer
Sea and road conditions can affect timing. Avoid tight, separate onward bookings.
Check the full ticket
Combined tickets may include road transfers, but inclusions vary. Read the provider details.
Ferries in Thailand are essential for island travel, but the useful location is the exact pier—not only the town or island name. Compare the vessel and complete itinerary, then confirm both piers, included road transfers, check-in instructions and current weather advice before travelling.
Understand the main ferry networks
Thailand's island services form several regional networks rather than one continuous national ferry line. In the Gulf, current operator networks connect mainland piers with Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao. On the Andaman side, routes can connect Phuket, Krabi, Koh Phi Phi, Koh Lanta and islands farther south. Eastern islands use other mainland gateways.
Travel between regions usually needs a land or air repositioning leg. A search result may package the bus and boat together, but there is no direct ferry across mainland Thailand. Use the Thai island travel guide to group stops by coast before booking individual sailings.
Match the vessel to the journey
A standard passenger ferry generally carries more people and luggage, while a high-speed catamaran or speedboat may reduce sailing time on a particular route. A smaller, faster boat can feel rougher when the sea is unsettled. Vehicle ferries use different piers and procedures and may carry cars or vans as well as foot passengers.
Do not choose on the label alone. Check the actual operator, vessel information, departure pier, arrival pier and total trip time. A faster sailing can still be less convenient if its pier requires a long transfer from your hotel.
The Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao hubs provide destination context, while the published Bangkok to Koh Tao route shows why some ferry trips begin with an overnight land leg.
Read combined tickets carefully
Operators and booking platforms sell boat-only tickets and combinations such as bus-and-ferry or van-and-ferry. A combined itinerary can simplify the handoff to the pier, but its title does not prove that hotel pickup, every transfer or a protected connection is included.
Read the pickup point, transfer vehicle, check-in location and final pier. When tickets are separate, leave a larger buffer and plan how to move between the station, terminal and pier. The operational checklist in the Thailand ferry guide covers those handoffs in detail.
Luggage rules also differ by operator. Confirm the allowance, fees and process for large suitcases, dive gear, bicycles or other equipment. Keep valuables and medication in a smaller bag you can control during boarding.
Plan for weather and onward connections
Sea conditions can delay, reroute or cancel a sailing. The Thai Meteorological Department publishes separate marine forecasts for the Gulf and Andaman Sea, while the operator decides whether a particular service runs. Recheck both close to departure instead of treating a seasonal generalisation as a live forecast.

Frequently asked questions
Final conditions always come from the provider and operator you book with.
Can ferry schedules change with the weather?
Yes. Operators may delay, alter or cancel services when conditions are unsafe. Recheck your departure close to travel.
Does a ferry ticket include hotel pickup?
Only when the provider explicitly says so. Do not assume that a ferry or combined ticket includes pickup or every transfer.
How early should I arrive at the pier?
Follow the check-in instructions for your specific operator and departure. They can vary between services and piers.
