The best way from Bangkok to Koh Chang is a combined bus or van and ferry ticket that carries you to the island or coordinates the pier transfer. There is no bridge. A public bus to Trat is cheaper but adds local connections; a private car is fastest and easiest for a group.
| Option | Typical time | Typical price | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Combined bus/van + ferry | 6.5–9 hours | THB 700–1,300 | Best overall |
| Bus to Trat + local transfer | 7–10 hours | THB 500–900 total | Cheapest |
Typical price from
฿500–฿1,300
| Private transfer + ferry | 5.5–7 hours | THB 4,000–6,500 per vehicle | Fastest for groups |
| Flight to Trat + road/ferry | 5–7 hours door to door | THB 2,500+ | Limited premium option |
Boonsiri’s official 2026 timetable publishes seasonal Bangkok–Trat–Koh Chang combinations. Other vans connect via the mainland ferry piers. Check whether the ticket ends at Ao Sapparot / the island ferry pier, Bang Bao, or includes a hotel-area drop. “Koh Chang” is not one central terminal.
Buses leave Bangkok, commonly from Ekkamai or Mo Chit, for Trat Bus Terminal. From Trat, take a songthaew or minivan to Ao Thammachat or another mainland pier, cross by ferry, then use an island songthaew. This can be cheapest but requires handling luggage at every change.
A driver can collect you in Bangkok and continue onto the vehicle ferry, then deliver you to the hotel. Confirm whether ferry tickets, tolls and waiting are included. The island’s west-coast road is steep and winding; travel after the ferry takes longer than map distance suggests.
Book combined tickets in advance for weekends, New Year and Thailand’s eastern-island high season. Vans have limited baggage space; contact the operator for dive equipment, bicycles or several suitcases. Keep valuables with you during transfers.
Services change between high and low season. Heavy rain can slow roads and rough weather can affect boats, although vehicle ferries are more robust than small speedboats. Leave a buffer on the return to Bangkok.
The main ferry landing is at the island’s northeast, while most accommodation is spread along the west coast. White Sand Beach is relatively close; Kai Bae, Lonely Beach and Bang Bao take progressively longer along a steep, winding road. Check whether a combined ticket includes the hotel zone—some transfers charge extra or stop before the far south.
Shared songthaews wait around ferry arrivals, but late or lightly loaded services can be less predictable. Keep cash for this final leg. If your hotel is on the east coast, arrange pickup because regular tourist transport is concentrated on the west.
Travelling via Trat independently gives flexibility but creates three separate connections: Bangkok bus to Trat, local vehicle to the pier, then island transport. It is sensible in daylight with modest luggage; a through ticket is safer for first-time visitors, families and anyone arriving near the last ferry.
The advertised Bangkok–pier road time is not the full trip. Add the ferry queue, crossing, unloading and west-coast transfer. A hotel near Bang Bao can be more than an hour beyond the island pier on a busy day. Private drivers may save terminal waiting but cannot bypass a ferry queue.
If taking the limited Trat flight, include baggage collection, the airport-to-pier drive and the same island transfer. It is faster only when schedules align. For most travellers, an early combined road departure is simpler and often reaches the hotel at a similar practical time.
Carry water and a light rain layer where accessible, not under the van. Ferry decks can be windy even when Bangkok is hot.
No. Every road itinerary includes a ferry from the Trat coast.
Vehicle ferries commonly depart the mainland around Ao Thammachat and arrive near Ao Sapparot. Tour operators may use different boats or piers.
Space is limited. Confirm allowance or choose a coach/private transfer for bulky bags.
Use the included drop-off if specified, or take an island songthaew. Fares rise for beaches farther south.
