Koh Chang has no bridge or railway station, so every overland arrival ends with a mainland road transfer and ferry crossing. From Bangkok, the simplest choice is normally a combined bus or van product that coordinates the journey to Trat province, the correct ferry facility and, when stated, an island hotel zone. Independent travel through Trat can cost less but creates several separate connections. The critical detail is the endpoint: a ticket may finish at the mainland pier, the Koh Chang ferry landing, Bang Bao or a west-coast accommodation area. Verify that endpoint before comparing prices.
Getting to Koh Chang
The Bangkok to Koh Chang guide explains combined bus, van and ferry tickets, independent travel through Trat and private transfers. An early combined departure is usually the easiest first visit because the road carrier and boat are planned as one itinerary. Still confirm whether the final island vehicle is included; “Koh Chang” alone does not promise delivery to a specific resort.
Independent travellers can take a bus toward Trat and continue by local vehicle to the mainland ferry area. This works best in daylight with modest luggage and enough time before the last practical crossing. A private driver can continue onto a vehicle ferry and deliver passengers to the hotel, but the quote should state whether tolls, ferry fares, waiting time and the island section are included.
Mainland and island arrival points
Mainland vehicle ferries use facilities in the Trat coastal area. The exact terminal matters because a taxi request for “Koh Chang pier” is ambiguous. Follow the operator name and map pin printed on the booking. Combined passenger products can use their own transfer sequence, so an old blog post is not a reliable substitute for the current voucher.
On Koh Chang, the main vehicle-ferry arrival is on the northeast side. Most visitor accommodation is distributed along the west coast. White Sand Beach is relatively close, while Kai Bae, Lonely Beach and Bang Bao require progressively longer travel on a steep, winding road. East-coast stays need a deliberately arranged transfer because the regular visitor transport pattern is less concentrated there.
Choosing a combined or separate ticket
A through ticket reduces connection work and is preferable with children, substantial luggage or a late-afternoon arrival. Read what “transfer included” means: some products include the mainland vehicle and ferry but stop at the island landing; others continue only to listed beaches. A distant hotel may carry a supplement or require a separate songthaew.
Separate tickets allow more flexibility in Trat and can be economical. They also place the risk of every connection on the traveller. If the Bangkok bus runs late, the local vehicle and ferry do not have to wait. Keep cash available, save the pier details offline and avoid building the trip around the final possible crossing.
