Boats are the only practical public transport from Phuket to Koh Phi Phi. A standard ferry from Rassada Pier to Tonsai Pier is the best choice for most travellers: allow roughly 2 hours on the water and expect fares around THB 450–750 before optional hotel transfers. A speedboat usually takes about 1–1.5 hours and costs around THB 700–1,100, but it offers less room and can feel much rougher in choppy conditions.
| Option | Typical crossing | Typical price | Best for |

| Speedboat | 1–1.5 hours | THB 700–1,100 | Shortest crossing in good conditions |
| Ferry with Phuket hotel pickup | 2.5–4 hours total | THB 650–1,000 | Avoiding a separate taxi to Rassada |
The common route is Rassada Pier in Phuket Town to Tonsai Pier on Phi Phi Don. Some products continue to Laem Tong, which is useful only for resorts in the island’s quieter northeast; it is not interchangeable with Tonsai.
Best overall: standard ferry. It normally has indoor seating, open-deck areas and more forgiving luggage space than a speedboat. It also gives travellers who are prone to motion sickness a steadier ride, although no boat is comfortable in strong swell.
Cheapest: ferry-only ticket. A low headline fare may exclude transport from Patong, Kata, Karon or Phuket Airport. Compare the final total with a combined hotel-pickup ticket before booking.
Fastest: speedboat. The crossing can be close to one hour, but check-in and road travel to the pier still apply. Speed is less valuable if the departure requires a long transfer across Phuket.
Rassada Pier, east of Phuket Old Town, is the island’s main hub for Phi Phi passenger boats. Plan to arrive at least 30–60 minutes before departure, or follow the longer check-in time on your ticket. Morning road traffic from the west-coast beaches can be slow, so a pickup window may begin well before the ferry time.
Andaman Wave Master publishes daily Phuket–Phi Phi ferry services and identifies the route as Rassada Pier to Tonsai Pier. The operator also states that schedules and operating periods can change without notice. Check the current ferry timetable rather than relying on a blog’s static schedule.
Tonsai Pier is the main arrival for Tonsai Village, Loh Dalum Bay and longtail-boat connections elsewhere on Phi Phi Don. The Tourism Authority of Thailand describes Tonsai Village as the island’s principal cluster of shops, restaurants and visitor services. See TAT’s Phi Phi destination overview.
Speedboats trade space and ride comfort for a shorter crossing. Operator timetables show several daytime services, but the vessel, pier and exact destination can differ. Review the current speedboat timetable and make sure you are buying transport, not a day tour with sightseeing stops.
Passengers usually step down into a smaller vessel, and spray or engine noise is more noticeable. Travellers who are pregnant, have recent back surgery or are sensitive to impacts should ask the operator whether the service is suitable. Keep electronics and documents in a water-resistant pouch even when larger bags are stored under cover.
The core Phuket–Phi Phi route is sold across the year, but year-round does not mean weather-proof. The southwest monsoon generally brings rougher Andaman conditions from roughly May to October. The Thai Meteorological Department can issue warnings for two-to-three-metre waves and advise small boats to stay ashore. Check TMD marine warnings before travelling.
Do not book a flight immediately after the return boat. A delayed or cancelled crossing can leave no realistic same-day alternative because Phi Phi has no airport or road connection.
Most passenger services accept normal travel luggage, but weight and size allowances vary. Tag every bag, retain valuables and medication, and avoid packing fragile items in an exposed external pocket. Porters may move larger bags quickly between the pier and vessel.
A hotel-pickup ticket should name its covered zone. Phuket Airport, Mai Khao, Rawai and outlying villas may require a surcharge or private transfer. On Phi Phi, verify whether your hotel provides pier collection; “free transfer” may mean staff meet you with a luggage cart, not a boat to another bay.
Book several days ahead in ordinary periods and earlier around Christmas, New Year, Songkran and long Thai weekends. Choose by pier, arrival point and vessel type, not only price. Check whether the fare includes a Phuket transfer, whether the boat is direct, and whether changes are permitted when weather affects travel.
Rassada Pier is the principal departure point for public ferries and speedboats to Tonsai Pier. Some specialist or resort services use other Phuket piers, so follow the exact ticket.
It is right for Tonsai Village and many central properties. Ask a resort in Laem Tong or another remote bay whether it uses Laem Tong service or arranges a longtail connection.
Choose the ferry for space, value and a steadier ride. Choose a speedboat when saving about an hour matters and conditions are suitable.
Yes. Boats may be delayed, consolidated or cancelled when wind and waves make the crossing unsafe, even if the route is normally sold year-round.
