A conventional ferry from Klong Jilad Pier to Tonsai Pier is the best option for most travellers. It takes about 2 hours and starts around THB 450–650 before hotel transfers. Speedboats can reduce the crossing to roughly 30–75 minutes for around THB 650–1,000, but they offer less space and a rougher ride. Travellers staying in Ao Nang or Railay should first compare departures from Nopparat Thara, Railay or Ao Nam Mao rather than travelling back to Krabi Town.

All public transport journeys end by boat because Phi Phi has no road or airport. The important comparison is therefore vessel type, departure pier and included land transfer—not whether a ferry is needed.
Best overall: standard ferry. It gives more room to move, handles suitcases better and normally costs less than a speedboat. It is also the clearer choice for travellers starting in Krabi Town.
Cheapest: ferry-only from Klong Jilad. Andaman Wave Master currently lists the route from THB 450. Budget for a taxi or songthaew to the pier if pickup is not included.
Fastest: speedboat. Current listings show journeys as short as around 30–60 minutes from certain Krabi-area piers. Check the exact departure point; a long road or longtail transfer can remove the time advantage.
Klong Jilad Pier is southwest of Krabi Town and is the main conventional-ferry terminal for Tonsai Pier. It is not Krabi Bus Terminal or Krabi Airport, so allow a separate road transfer. Arrive 30–60 minutes before sailing, or follow the longer check-in instruction on the ticket.
Andaman Wave Master publishes daily Krabi–Phi Phi sailings, names Klong Jilad Pier and Tonsai Pier, and lists a two-hour journey from THB 450. The same page warns that schedules and operating periods can change without notice. Check the current official timetable.
Current booking results also show standard ferries and speedboats throughout the day. Compare current Krabi–Phi Phi listings, using the platform only for date-specific availability and indicative prices.
Ao Nang departures commonly use Nopparat Thara Pier, sometimes with hotel pickup. Ao Nang Travel publishes an everyday Ao Nang–Phi Phi ferry with a two-hour journey and included hotel pickup when booked within its conditions. Review the operator’s Ao Nang service.
Railay travellers may use a service from Railay or transfer by longtail to a mainland pier. Confirm how luggage is handled during any shallow-water longtail boarding; hard-shell cases are less convenient than backpacks on wet steps.
Tonsai Pier is the central arrival for Tonsai Village and Loh Dalum. Most nearby accommodation is reached on foot, often with a luggage cart. Resorts at Laem Tong or remote bays may need a separate longtail boat, so ask the hotel whether staff meet your ferry.
Do not confuse transport with a Phi Phi day tour. A tour may stop at Maya Bay or snorkelling sites and return to Krabi; a one-way transfer delivers you and your luggage to Tonsai.
Core services are sold across the year, but the Andaman Sea is rougher during southwest-monsoon periods. The Thai Meteorological Department may warn of two-to-three-metre waves and order small boats ashore. Check current marine warnings.
A larger ferry is usually more comfortable when conditions are unsettled. Keep documents, electronics, medication and one dry layer in a water-resistant daypack. Label large bags before handing them to pier staff.
Book several days ahead in ordinary periods and earlier from December through February, around Songkran and on long weekends. Compare the total including hotel pickup. Confirm the pier, check-in time, arrival pier, luggage allowance and whether the ticket is a direct transfer rather than an excursion.
Klong Jilad is the main Krabi Town ferry pier. Ao Nang, Railay and Ao Nam Mao also have relevant services, depending on operator and season.
Choose the ferry for value, space and a steadier ride. Choose a speedboat when the shortest crossing matters and sea conditions are suitable.
No road taxi is needed for central Tonsai accommodation. Remote bays may require a hotel boat or longtail transfer.
The core route is commonly sold year-round, but individual departures can change or cancel because of wind, waves or operating decisions.
