Phuket to Koh Lanta: the quick answer
From roughly November to April, a direct speedboat or ferry from Rassada Pier to Saladan Pier can be the easiest journey, taking about 1.5–4 hours depending on vessel and whether it changes or stops at Phi Phi. Outside that period, choose the year-round road route: bus or shared van across the Sarasin Bridge, then south through Krabi and onto Koh Lanta using the local vehicle-ferry crossing. Allow 5–6 hours for a shared road transfer.
The destination is usually Saladan, Koh Lanta Yai’s northern transport hub. A hotel farther south can add another 30–90 minutes, so the shortest advertised crossing is not the same as the full door-to-door journey.
Best, cheapest and fastest options
Best overall in high season: direct boat. It avoids the long loop by road and arrives at Saladan, close to Klong Dao and northern Long Beach. Choose a conventional ferry if ride comfort and luggage space matter more than speed.
Best overall in low season: shared van. The road-and-vehicle-ferry route keeps operating when passenger-boat timetables shrink. It is also less exposed to open-sea cancellations.
Cheapest: shared road transfer. Fares usually include the vehicle-ferry crossing, but check whether pickup in Patong or another Phuket beach zone and drop-off at your exact Lanta hotel are included.
Fastest: direct speedboat. It can reach Saladan in about 90 minutes in favourable conditions, but this is a seasonal, weather-sensitive option rather than a universal service.
Seasonal ferry or speedboat
Most Phuket–Lanta passenger boats leave Rassada Pier and arrive at Saladan Pier. Some larger-ferry itineraries travel via Tonsai Pier on Phi Phi, where passengers may stay aboard or change vessels. A “four-hour ferry” and a “90-minute speedboat” are therefore different products, not inconsistent descriptions of the same journey.
Operator evidence is explicit about seasonality. Andaman Wave Master lists Phuket–Lanta via Phi Phi only from December to March, with Rassada and Saladan as the endpoints. Shared van and the vehicle-ferry route
The overland journey is longer but simpler than it sounds. The vehicle leaves Phuket by bridge, crosses the mainland toward Krabi, then uses the short public car-ferry connection from Hua Hin Pier to Koh Lanta Noi. It continues over the bridge to Koh Lanta Yai and usually drops passengers at hotels.
Current booking listings show combined bus, van and car-ferry products even during July, supporting the road route’s role as the low-season option. Compare current Phuket–Koh Lanta listings, but treat prices and departure times as date-specific.
Pickup rounds are the main source of delay. A ticket from Phuket Airport may be quicker than one that collects from several west-coast beaches, while a drop at Kantiang Bay can take much longer than Saladan. Tell the operator about large luggage; a full minivan may require a paid luggage seat.
Weather and sea conditions
The southwest monsoon brings rougher Andaman conditions, commonly between May and October. The Thai Meteorological Department issues specific wind-wave warnings and may direct small boats to remain ashore. Check current TMD warnings.
Even in high season, allow flexibility. A speedboat can be uncomfortable in chop, and a late arrival at Saladan affects onward hotel transfers. Keep medicine, travel documents and one change of clothes in a small protected bag.

For travel from November to April, book the boat several days ahead and earlier around Christmas and New Year. Verify whether the fare includes Phuket hotel pickup and Koh Lanta hotel drop-off. For May–October, search the road connection first instead of waiting for a passenger-boat schedule that may not appear.
Private transfers make sense for families, travellers with dive gear or anyone arriving late enough to miss shared services. Ask whether the quote includes all ferry charges and whether the vehicle can reach your hotel before the local ferry’s closing time.
