Koh Phangan has no commercial airport or bridge, so the standard arrival is a passenger ferry, most commonly to Thong Sala Pier. Travellers connect from Koh Samui, Koh Tao or the Surat Thani mainland network. The sea crossing is only part of the trip: Samui has several departure piers, Surat Thani products begin at different airport, station or city pickups, and accommodation on Koh Phangan can be far from Thong Sala. Select the complete itinerary by both piers and arrange the island road transfer before arrival.
Getting to Koh Phangan
From Samui, the Koh Samui to Koh Phangan guide explains direct passenger ferries. Choose the Samui departure pier by its road distance from your hotel or airport, not only the advertised sailing time. A short sea crossing from the wrong side of Samui can still produce a long door-to-door journey.
From Koh Tao, use the Koh Tao to Koh Phangan guide. From the mainland, Surat Thani to Koh Phangan combines a road transfer with the ferry. The starting point must name Surat Thani Airport, Phun Phin railway station, town or the coastal pier. These are separate locations.
Arrival at Thong Sala Pier
Thong Sala is the principal transport hub on the southwest coast. Regular inter-island and mainland services commonly arrive here, with taxis, shared songthaews, ticket offices and local services nearby. It is not Haad Rin and it is not beside every north-coast resort.
Some special or operator-specific services may use another landing. Follow the current ticket and send its pier name to the accommodation. Do not arrange a pickup at “Koh Phangan pier” without the written location and scheduled boat.
Choosing the right ferry
Compare sailing schedule, departure pier, check-in time, vessel type, luggage rule and final hotel transfer. A fast boat can offer less comfortable motion in rough conditions, while a larger passenger vessel can take longer. The right choice depends on the entire journey and current operating decision.
Use the ferry hub and Thailand ferry guide to plan check-in and separate connections. Official operator timetables are dynamic. Recheck them close to travel and do not build a flight connection around the last possible boat.
Local transfer after arrival
Shared songthaews and taxis meet many Thong Sala arrivals. Name the beach or hotel and confirm how the fare is calculated. Haad Rin is southeast of Thong Sala, while Srithanu, Haad Yao, Chaloklum and other northern areas require different road journeys.
